Exchange program //4th year
The contours of geographic delimitation to the south of the Mediterranean have become in recent years a scenario of intense and disorderly human activity as a result of processes of demographic, political, economic or climatic expulsion.
This phenomenon is particularly severe in the case of Melilla, which has acquired the status of a migrant terminal, with human groups held in extremely uncertain waiting times.
Even when people succeed at passing the border, they are held in really bad conditions, not knowing what is their destiny and future.

Residents
VS.
Refugees
Conflict
The refugees do not get involved in the city, they feel like a border and has no appropriate home.
And from the other side; Melilla’s residents feel that the refugees are an obstacle for their existing lives and environment.
You can be a citizen or you can be stateless, but it is difficult to imagine being a border.
(Andre’ Green, inside Etienne Balibar WHAT IS A BORDER?)
Concept
In order to break this mental border, spontaneous meetings between these 2 groups should be a part of their everyday life.
Research
First thing to be noticed from a glimpse at Melilla’s map, was the diversity of the typology- a combination between Spain &Morocco’s.
Design
One of the crossing points was chosen as the project’s site. The site’s typology design combines between the different typologies, reflecting the project’s concept; Diversity& acceptance.
Planning
The planned area offers a complex that combines between public and private functions.
The private functions include temporal or permanents dwelling to refugees.
Private
The public functions serves as a platform of interaction between residents and refugees in order to break the Mental border.
